The supply chain, in today’s complex world of commerce, is essentially the producer to the end-user or consumer interspersed with a whole host of intermediaries.  Next to the supplier, the most significant link in the distribution chain is the wholesale distributor. It is now no longer practical or cost effective for the seller to market his goods himself hence the need for a wholesale distributor. The United Nations Statistics Division defines ‘wholesale’ as the resale of new and used goods ‘without transformation’. But this is not strictly true.  At his premises, the wholesaler frequently unpacks goods, breaks them into smaller lots, and repacks them according to the dictates of his distribution network.
In today’s world of e-commerce, the supply chain has extended beyond the boundaries of national borders. While internal trade is still very much prevalent, global trade and commerce has become the order of the day. Developed nations find it more economical to import certain goods at a far cheaper price essentially because of lower labor costs. Every country depends on imports and exports.  Hence the role of the wholesale distributor had altered considerably and his horizons have extended.  To meet market requirements, the distributor currently has to dredge the international sphere for suppliers of repute who can match his requirement at a cheaper cost.  Similarly, on behalf of indigenous manufacturers, the distributor is frequently required to establish a consistent and reliable export market.  These innovative challenges have spawned a completely new strategy.
